UAE GCAA Pledges Support for Reducing Carbon Emissions

On March 10, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) initiated the 2nd ICAO International Aviation and Environment Seminar. The annual event serves as a platform to address various issues related to the environmental impact of the aviation industry, including noise pollution and climate change. For its 2015 seminar, the ICAO focused on the reduction of carbon emissions as a primary objective. The regulatory agency welcomed aviation specialists from organizations such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA), as well as 70 leading experts in Middle East environmental science and climatology.
Also in attendance for the three-day seminar were representatives from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), including H.E. Saif Al Suwaidi, the organization’s director general, and Laila Bin Hareb, its assistant director general of strategic affairs and international relations. Both individuals expressed the GCAA’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions while supporting the growth of the aviation industry,
pledging to back the efforts of the ICAO and collaborate with the global aviation community. To this end, the GCAA will aid the development of a global market-based measure for aviation emissions and has adopted its own State Action Plan headed by Maryam Al Balooshi, the GCAA’s environmental studies manager.
